Planet 1999 — "Devotion"

pc music. that's the subtitle!

Approaching 3500 words in the Word doc that I use to keep a local copy of all these logs and I’ll be honest— I feel a little fatigued with this project today. I think an album a day is an extremely ambitious goal, one that feels more attainable on some days than others, and I shouldn’t feel too obligated to write anything groundbreaking or 100% original. (Or 300+ words each day!) But hey, that’s the pain of putting something out there, right? You always want to impress or pour more of yourself into it than you can, or fuck with it until it’s perfect, and that’s not really healthy nor attainable. I’m probably gonna re-evaluate this a little bit going forward, or spend the rest of the week doing shorter entries or more EPs and see how I feel. I’m still unmedicated and validation for achieving a self-set goal is nice, but it isn’t medication.

It’s funny that I found this a day after listening (and relistening) to VANISHING ACT. Feels very “shot & chaser.” Planet 1999’s “Devotion” is completely inoffensive; it’s airy, clean, more traditionally inspired by bubblegum pop, and while not “sterile” necessarily, it’s definitely cleaner than a lot of hyperpop, artpop, glitchpop, or whatever you specifically would classify this as. I hesitate to compare the two any more than that because outside of my first exposure to both happening on back-to-back days, they’re both different projects from different artists.

“Devotion” is perfectly fine. It’s 15 minutes of beats that sound foggily reminiscent of a Casio keyboard’s auto-accompaniment and vocals that are polished to a sonically blinding, 90s/00s electronic sheen. It’s bright, artificial, and saccharinely dreamy, but ultimately feels a little unimaginative, not really willing to go far enough to be super memorable or demanding of future replays. I really do wish I liked it more!

favorite tracks: party, haze

(the 8 minute, industrial rave a.g. cook & baseck remix of party might be a little more my speed! [lol])
